Weekly parent: The president who stole summer vacation?

Breaking news: President Obama’s approval rating plummets in elementary schools around the country.

Why? He wants to steal summer vacation.

Because? Kids get too much vacation already. Luckily, third-graders can’t vote, so who cares if they’re pissed off.

In truth, the president says he wants to shorten summer vacation, implement longer school days, and offer open school on weekends so students have a “safe” place to be. The first two are proven strategies for improving test scores and skills in fields like math and science (fields where U.S. students lag behind most of the rest of the developed world). The latter offers security for kids who might otherwise be hanging out on street corners or unsupervised.

Bravo! I was reading in Outliers (Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book) that our lack of school days is one of the reasons we’re falling behind in math and science. More important, summer vacation is just a leftover from the days when we were a more agrarian society. Now that so many parents work, the elimination of summer vacation would be a Godsend in more ways that one. I’m all for it–regardless of what my non voting kid thinks.

I left some remarks, some of which were rather mean-spirited. For that, I apologize. I’m sure you intend nothing but the best for yoyr children. But I have seen the encroachment of socialism to the point of totalitarianism, and I am angry that more people in this country do NOT. 9/11 was a wake-up call. They were sloppy, and it should be evident that something sinister is manipulating society. Having investigated in-depth for several years now, I am more convinced than ever that the “global elite” control our leaders and our media by virtue of their wealth and influence. Nothing personal…Rob

I hear you, Rob. And you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. For some reason, I’m not receiving notification when I have comments, so I’m late in moderating. I decided not to approve the one that you rightly noted contained some mean-spirited remarks. Thanks for commenting, regardless.
